1. Introduction According to Nissan Global (2011), â€Å"The Nissan Leaf is the world’s first 100-percent electric, zero-emission car designed for the mass market. With its advanced powertrain, Nissan Leaf provides a totally new driving experience, with its smooth and responsive acceleration, stable handling, and quietness. Incorporating the latest IT systems, Nissan Leaf is always connected to driving support functions for a secure and convenient ownership experience. Nissan Leaf was launched in December 2010 in Japan and the United States and in 2011 in Europe and other markets. The Leaf has won numerous international accolades, including the prestigious 2011 European Car of the Year, 2011 World Car of the Year and 2011-12 Cars of the Year Japan awards†. The continuous success of the Nissan Leaf electric car in the Japan and United States market is considered the developmental platform to expand into the Asian market, especially in the Vietnam market. As the Global Advertising Director on behalf of Nissan Cars announces that the Nissan Leaf electric car will be launched in January 2013 and other launched events relevant to the Nissan Leaf lasting within 3 months. It is expected to create a green trend for the transportation. 2. Vietnamese market analysis 2.1 Current market analysis The car market in Vietnam is tending to grow strongly by three impacts. Firstly, the customers consider car as the main vehicle for the transportation increasingly more. Especially, as reported on Tienphong (2012), the individual-car segmentation raised up to 15% in 2012. This indicates that an increase in the customers’ interest in purchasing cars. Furthermore, DanTri (2011) reported that the economic crisis has changed in the automobile market leading that the consumer tastes have changed, and they tend to purchase small cars with the good operation, facilities, affordable price and ability to save fuel. Finally, Trends (2010) article indicated that: â€Å"There is a tendency towards electric cars, supported by the emission legislation†. Based on these current situations, the Nissan Leaf car’s design and operation are one of the advantages likely to gain the attention in the Vietnamese customers’ mind and the automotive market. 2.2 Target audience Customers of the Nissan Leaf electric car will be focused on 2 age groups: 25-35 and 36-49 years old with an income monthly of 25 million VND and above. The gender is mostly for women because they support green activities such as buying an eco-friendly car more than men. Besides, customers are noticed by 2 main type of personality: Thinker and Innovator. Thinkers often have an educated orientation and good environmental awareness. Innovators tend to grasp new technology and set trends. Additionally, there is a possible prediction for families that parent might purchase electric car for their children. Therefore, parent will be in 45-55 years old with the modern lifestyle. 3. Advertising Objectives In the first 3 months of the launch period, there are 3 advertising objectives are identified obviously: 1. Within 2 months of the launch period, building 70 % awareness of the target audience about the Nissan Leaf that is not a hybrid car, it’s completely electric, it has no gasoline or diesel powered engine to supplement for power; that is an environmental brand with the good operations and friendly features as other diesel powered cars 2. Achieve 30% of the remaining target audience to understand the basic information of the Nissan Leaf 3. Convince two-thirds of the prospective customers to visit a retailer for a test drive 3.1 Target audience evaluation â€Å"Green life† is becoming the most compelling term to Vietnamese consumers. The benefit of green activities is socially approved since numerous undertaken researches. Therefore, the strengths of Nissan Leaf electric car that are utilizing no fossil fuels, there are no emissions; will be the great attention of the social because of its positive eco-impacts. These evidences will efficiently support our advertising objectives which use green-conscious lifestyle as a key to influences their target audiences. 4. The creative strategy 4.1 Creative platform 4.2 Advertising Appeal As indicated by V.K.Reddy on Scribd (2012), â€Å"Advertising appeals aim to influence the way consumers view themselves and how buying certain products  can prove to be beneficial for them. The message conveyed through advertising appeals influences the purchasing decisions of consumers†. Therefore, by identifying the advertising appeals, the specific wants or needs of customers will be reached effectively. The advertisement is blended between Rational appeals accorded to William.F.A, Michael.F.W and Christian Arens’s the broad category of appeals (2011, p.342), and Music appeals is mentioned by V.K.Reddy on Scribd (2012) Rational Appeals Music Appeals â€Å"Rational appeals are directed at customer’s practical, functional need for the product or service†. (William.F.A, Michael.F.W and Christian Arens, 2012, p.432). It means that the rational appeals emphasize the features and characteristics of the product or service to highlight the benefits of using the specific brand. When applying Rational appeals into the Nissan Leaf advertising, there is an increase in customers’ product understanding and credibility because they have a clear view and proper information as the ads might show the product’s operations and outstanding facilities to have a lively product-picture for customers. Besides, it offers an explanation of how it runs or other information such as the contact number, websites so that customers can evaluate quickly the product benefits According to V.K.Reddy on Scribd (2012), music has a certain intrinsic value and can help to increase the persuasiveness of the advertisement. It also helps to cap ture the attention and retention of customers. When Music appeals are used in the ads, customers can base on the melody as the product identification to recall the product. Music appeals in the ads should be gentle and emotional. 4.3 Advertising Executional Styles The advertising styles identification is an important work because it has a great influence on the customers’ perception. How do you convince customers to believe in the product during a few seconds of the advertisement? Therefore, the advertising styles are the impacted key to your success. In the Nissan Leaf advertisement, there are 2 advertising styles applied in to  express the product’s features: Lifestyle Demonstration As presented about Advertising and Execution Styles by Brandon Schuster on Slideshare (2011), â€Å"Lifestyle shows how well the product will fit in the customer’s lifestyle†. Based on the features of Lifestyle style, the Nissan Leaf ads create 2 conflicting worlds to makes customers imagine how the product is useful for them in their normal life, how it can impact on their driving habits. Thereby, customers can filter the product benefits leading to the decision Demonstration style is interactive way to advertise the product because customers will have opportunities to find out additional information after seeing the advertisement, thereby, the expected benefits are shown to customers. Applied in the Nissan Leaf, the demonstration style helps to show how the operating system runs, how to use the facilities and to charge safety the battery. 4.4 TV Commercial Storyboard The story starts with the scene of the up-down world space: The Down-World’s life is dark, has many dust and smoke, the citizens have to wear masks whereas; the Up-world is bright, peaceful and has lots of trees. The Down citizens always ask themselves: â€Å"Why can the Up create the beautiful world like that?† shown by the scene that the down citizens often look their face up. The music in this section is gentle and sophisticated. One day, a Down citizen find out a pipe to climb to the Up, he decides to find the answer. This scene is presented by his eye motions showing the seconds he was making decision with the faster beat music. After climbing, he is surprised by the wonderful Up world, especially, when he sees a car. He sits into the car and drives it. In these scenes, the character will perform how to use the car’s operating systems and other functions. The driving car speed is performed by the scene: when the car crosses a tree, it creates a gust of wind blew a leaf following to the car. At the end, he stops and charges the battery. The leaf falls in the Nissan symbol and the logo/ slogan of Nissan occurs. 4.5 Overview of Media There are varied media vehicles to advertise the product; however, each product needs to identify the specific media vehicles to maximize their advantages for the product features. The Nissan Leaf Advertisement uses 3 main media vehicles including print, electric media and social media. Firstly, magazines are used as the first consideration in terms of print media because it is the best medium to narrow down to selected markets and allows an advertiser to reach a particular target audience with a high-quality presentation. It is strategically placed to appeal the different interests. Secondly, TV as electric media has a mass power to cover and reach huge audiences quickly and frequently. Especially, Nissan Leaf is a new product for the Vietnam market, the TV impacts is the key to reach the customer’s attention. Therefore, it brings more opportunities to express the brand with personality and image. Finally, social media is a highly interactive vehicle to evaluate easily the cu stomer response. 5. Media plan The media plan of the campaign will spread over 3 months: February-March-April in 2013. In the first month of the launch period, the core media vehicles are used frequently to build the Nissan Leaf awareness and the customer’s retention. The third month will focus more on direct marketing activities to recall the Nissan Leaf. 5. Evaluation â€Å"Advertising is one of the largest costs in a company’s marketing budget. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan, testing is the important tool used to measure the advertising dollars is sent worthily. Advertising’s role in Marketing Mix Advertising is one of the most important factors affecting directly for the success, therefore, the advertising plan plays a mass role in the marketing mix elements for the Nissan Leaf. 4P’s element Advertising Role in Product Product is the core element in the marketing mix because the market demand bases on the product’s utility and popularity. According to William.F.A, Michael.F.W and Christian Arens (2011, p.66), â€Å"An ad may not address a product’s quality directly, the positive image conveyed by advertising implies quality†. It means that advertising creates the added value for the Nissan Leaf. Especially, Nissan Leaf is a new product in the Vietnam car-market, advertising and PR activities as Trade Show are used to introduce and educate customers about it. Thereby, Advertising ensures the survival and success of the Nissan Leaf. Besides, Advertising and PR create demand for the Nissan Leaf because they spread information about the product and increases customers’ positive awareness through technological advances of the media and the power of press release. Especially in the large-scale distribution, advertising plays an important part in distributing process. It will maximize the areas where distribution is not to reach, ensure that smooth distribution of goods and keep customers well-informed. Promotion When implementing the marketing mix, the Nissan Leaf will introduce sales promotion campaign to capture the target audience and potential customers. Conclusion Nissan Leaf provides electric cars which are targeted to the Vietnamese women market with purpose of building the Nissan Leaf awareness for Vietnamese customers and convincing them to change their driving habits by purchasing them. Little Red Riding Hood Analysis Essay

I am going to describe the theme of Little Red Riding Hood, and describe the elements I found to contribute to the theme, how those elements affect the narrative theme. The elements that I am going to use in this paper are the narrative point of view, plot and symbolism. The point of view of is described in our text as is third-person objective, which the narrator takes a detached approach to the characters and action increasing the dramatic effect of the story (Clugston, R. W. 2010). â€Å"Plot tells what happens to the characters in a story. A plot is built around a series of events that take place within a definite period. No rules exist for the order in which the events are presented (Summers, Hollis 2012)†. The plot of the story is considered to be little red riding hood’s death as she is eaten by the wolf. The point of view, symbolism and plot help the reader to find the theme the author is portraying in the story. To find the theme of a story you need to know how to find identify the point of view of the story. As you read the story you can see that the narrator is not telling the story in the first-person point of view, the first-person point of view is when one of the characters in the story, telling their own thoughts or feelings. Third-person point of view is when the narrator is not a character in the story. There are a couple different types of third-person point of view, omniscient, and objective. Omniscient point of view is when the narrator is knows or can relate to the characters, there is a second type of omniscient point of view is limited omniscient point of view which is when the narrator relates only one characters feelings or thoughts. The author of â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood† uses third-person omniscient point of view. In the first paragraph you can see that the narrator is not a character in the story, â€Å"Once upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl, the prettiest creature who was ever seen. Her mother was excessively fond of her; and her grandmother doted on her still more. This good woman had a little red riding hood made for her. It suited the girl so extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding Hood† (Clungston, 2010). Plot according to our text is defined as â€Å"A dynamic element in fiction, a sequence of interrelated, conflicting actions and events that typically build to a climax and bring about a resolution. Clungston, R. W. 2010 Chapter 5)†. â€Å"A unified plot has a beginning, a middle, and an end. That is, an author leads us from somewhere (a character with a problem), through somewhere (the character facing the problem), to somewhere (the character overcoming or being overcome by the problem). In literary terms, we speak of a story having an exposition, a rising action, a climax, and a denouement, or outcome. The exposition gives the background and situation of the story. The rising action builds upon the given material. It creates suspense, or a reader’s desire to find out what happens next. The climax is the highest point of interest. The denouement ends the story (Summers, Hollis 2012). † In â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood† she starts the story off with describing little red riding hood as an extremely attractive woman who is asked by her mother to take some cake and a pot of butter to her sick grandmother. She describes red riding hoods trip to her grandmother’s house, where she met a wolf, whom was very hungry, â€Å"As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he dared not, because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest (Clungston, 2010)†. The wolf decided to convince red to go one direction to her grandmother’s house, â€Å"â€Å"Well,† said the wolf, â€Å"and I’ll go and see her too. I’ll go this way and go you that, and we shall see who will be there first† (Clungston, 2010). The plot changes to one of deceit when the wolf arrives at grandma’s house before red riding hood, He pretends to be red and the grandmother has him in. The wolf then kills the grandmother and puts on her bed clothes and waits for red riding hood to arrive. He tricks red riding hood into believing he is her grandmother. â€Å"The wolf cried out to her, softening his voice as much as he could, â€Å"Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up† (Clungston, 2010). After red riding hood came in the wolf gets her to take her clothes off and crawl in bed with him. He sets the trap for her and she gets eaten up by the wolf, â€Å"All the better to eat you up with. † And, saying these words, this wicked wolf fell upon Little Red Riding Hood, and ate her all up. (Clungston, 2010). According to chapter 7 in our text symbolism â€Å"a symbol is something that has a literal identity but also stands for something else—something that is widely understood and has been developed over a long period of time or by common agreement. This second identity (or referent) is always abstract in nature† (Clungston, R. W. 2010). One of the parts in the story that I find has symbolism is â€Å"As she was going through the wood, she met with a wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he dared not, because of some woodcutters working nearby in the forest. (Clungston, R. W. 2010). The wolf symbolizes a person trying to take red riding hood’s body, His wanting to eat her up. When the wolf talked to little red riding hood and the author writes â€Å"The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and talk to a wolf,† it symbolizes red riding hoods innocence as in she has never had sex with anyone before. The wolf says to red riding hood to â€Å"come get into bed with me† symbolizes the temptations we all face in life. The theme that is hidden in â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood† is the death of red riding hoods innocence, and virginity. The story was written in a time when that having sex before marriage was unheard of and made a woman frowned upon by others. By using symbolism, plot and point of view it helps the reader identify the point that the author is writing about. I found that the meaning of the fairy tale is one of morals, and how for some people once you lose your virginity then you are tainted or ruined for the person you love and get married to.

Materials and operations management play a crucial role in the success of any organization. Of particular importance to the materials and operations divisions is management’s complete understanding of the hospitals functions as a whole entity. After reading this paper, one will understand the importance of materials management and operations management as well as how both departments must work together to ensure the hospital runs efficiently and maintains profitability. Furthermore, one will also understand the importance of a supply chain and possible constraints to the implementation of the process. Additionally, one will understand the effects of a new collaborative planning process and why such a process is beneficial to the hospital. Finally, suggestions will be given to enable the hospital to manage the supply chain in situations of disaster. Role of Materials and Operations Management Materials management is perhaps the most important part of health care as â€Å"total expenditures can total nearly 50% of a hospital's budget† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 41). Materials managers are held responsible for many functions. However, the most important attribute a materials manager must possess is coordination. â€Å"Materials management directs the healthcare supply chain by coordinating the flow of goods from manufacturers, through distributors, through hospital receiving docks, to the point of ultimate use or consumption† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 242). Operations management is another important function of a hospital. Healthcare operations management is the quantitative management of the supporting business systems and processes that transform resources (or inputs) into healthcare services (outputs)† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 6). Just as materials managers have many functions and goals, so too do operations managers. Key functions of the operations manager include â€Å"workflow, physical layout, capacity design, physical network optimization, staffing levels, productivity management, supply chain and logistics management, quality management, and process engineering† (Langabeer, 2008, p. ). Goals of the operations manager include reducing costs, reducing variability and improving logistics flow, improving productivity, improving the quality of customer service, and continuously improving business processes (Langabeer, 2008). However, the most important goal operations managers must strongly consider when implementing a materials management plan is reducing costs. Operations managers have many opportunities to reduce costs. Costs can be reduced by analyzing budgets, tracking resources, and finding ways to reduce product and services costs. â€Å"Finding waste, improving utilization, and generally stabilizing and reducing the overall cost of delivering services are essential functions† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 9). The most effective way for operations managers to reduce costs is to record all aspects of the organization and periodically review progress either monthly or quarterly. A hospital with appropriate tracking and management systems will be much more likely to reduce costs because it understands the underlying cost structure† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 9). A few ways materials management influences operations management are as follows: â€Å"the nature of the activities† in the materials management department â€Å"is actually quite operational, they have an impact on downstream departments and patient satisfaction, they are labor-intensive processes, and many times they draw from the s ame labor talent pool† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 244). Constraints to the Supply Chain Constraints are inevitable and every organization is prone to them whether the organization is in the manufacturing sector or service sector. A few constraints hospitals face include â€Å"managing supply levels, higher labor costs, space constraints, and multiple product classifications† (Sentient Health, 2007). Considering the above constraints, the main goal of both operations and materials managers is to reduce costs. The most beneficial way for hospitals to overcome constraints as well as reduce costs is to automate the supply chain. Supply automation is the use of technology to streamline inventory, consumption, charging and ordering procedures. Examples of this include the use of bar codes or radio frequency identification to identify and track inventory as it moves throughout the supply chain† (Sentient Health, 2007, p. 2). However before implementation can begin, the hospital must evaluate the advantages of automation as well as t he factors the hospital must consider when deciding to implement such a system. According to Sentient Health (2007), the advantages of automation include â€Å"reduced manual effort, greater information accuracy, improved inventory performance, improved cash flow, improved space utilization, and improved purchasing decisions† (p. 3). While understanding the benefits of such a system is important to the process, knowing which areas the system will have an effect on is detrimental to the hospitals implementation success. Factors to consider before implementing such a system include â€Å"mobility, ease of use, cost/budget/objectives, flexibility/ease of integration, and reporting† (Sentient Health, 2007, p. 3). Effects and Justification of a New Collaborative Planning Process Although automation is one option for the hospital to reduce costs and improve supply chains, other options such as sales and operations planning (S&OP) and collaborative planning, forecasting, and replenishment (CPFR). The main focus of S&OP is to coordinate demand and supply with the intention of increasing the hospital’s profitability (Langabeer, 2008). To ensure the S&OP process is successful, the hospitals operations management must focus on four key principles: (1) provide a common base of information around the immediate market dynamics; (2) manage supply chain performance; (3) manage product portfolios collaboratively; and (4) create business plans and scenarios in which departments can share. According to Langabeer (2008), â€Å"benefits from the S&OP process include better cross-functional alignment, gap analysis, more efficient resource planning, and more effective use of promotional resources† (p. 338). CPFR is another option available to the hospital. â€Å"CPFR seeks to improve the relationship between retailers and suppliers with the intent to achieve full collaboration and improve the sharing of information around consumer point-of-sales data through the retail supply chain to improve overall chain performance† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 338). The main difference between CPFR and the other two options available to reduce costs and improve supply chains is a set of guidelines operations managers must follow during implementation. The guidelines are as follows: (1) share a common philosophy among all parties of implementation; (2) operations managers must use specific definitions and detail into the business process; (3) operations managers must ensure data resulting from the process is precise, easily accessible, and understood completely by all parties taking part in the process. Finally, for CPFR to be successful, milestones must be set. Particular milestones of importance to the hospital â€Å"include an improvement in forecasting accuracy, improvements in customer service levels or fill rates to providers, increased product line availability, reduction of inventory levels, and generally better financial cash flows† (Langabeer, 2008, p. 340-341). Coping in a Disaster Situation Disaster situations are difficult to plan for because disasters are unpredictable. However, materials and operations managers must understand the implications a disaster situation has on the hospital as well as ways to effectively handle such a situation to ensure patient safety, customer satisfaction, and profitability remain a priority. Richey (2009) refers to a pyramid when discussing supply chains in disaster situations. The composition of the pyramid includes the following tiers: capstone-resource management; left-facing front corner-collaboration, which is based on the relationship management theory; right-facing front corner-communication, which is based on communication theory; and back corner-contingency planning, which is based on the competing values theory. According to Richey (2009, p. 621), he interconnection† of the above principles include â€Å"(1) finding ways to effectively partner and develop improving collaborative relationships built of long-term commitment; (2) fostering information development and exchange for facilitating strategic planning based in limited safeguarding; and (3) developing contingency programs that incorporate the flexibility for responding to the inevitable changes in expected events while pursuing sometimes inconsistent goals. Conclusion  Materials and operations management work hand-in-hand to ensure the hospital runs as efficiently as possible. Furthermore, understanding all aspects of the supply chain will ensure materials and operations managers are readily equipped to deal with situations of disaster. However, operations and materials managers must understand the importance of such a concept. Understanding how to handle such a situation will ensure materials and operations managers the ability to maintain order as well as patient safety and continued profitability.

Virtue ethics Essay Character-based ethics A right act is the action a virtuous person would do in the same circumstances. Virtue ethics is person rather than action based: it looks at the virtue or moral character of the person carrying out an action, rather than at ethical duties and rules, or the consequences of particular actions. Virtue ethics not only deals with the rightness or wrongness of individual actions, it provides guidance as to the sort of characteristics and behaviours a good person will seek to achieve. A good person is someone who lives virtuously who possesses and lives the virtues. Its a useful theory since human beings are often more interested in assessing the character of another person than they are in assessing the goodness or badness of a particular action. This suggests that the way to build a good society is to help its members to be good people, rather than to use laws and punishments to prevent or deter bad actions. But it wouldnt be helpful if a person had to be a saint to count as virtuous. Global Warming Two issues that worry many scientists are global warming and the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps the earth at temperatures that are livable. What does the greenhouse effect have to do with global warming? When humans release gases into the air, the greenhouse effect will alter the temperature of the earth. More gases in the atmosphere means the earth will start to get warmer, and the result is global warming. On the other hand, if there was no greenhouse effect, the earth would be too cold for humans to comfortably exist. In order to talk about global warming, we must first learn what causes the greenhouse effect. The three most common greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane. Many of the suns rays are absorbed by water vapor. Water vapor is a natural atmospheric gas and it accounts for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“80 percent of natural greenhouse warming; the remaining 20 percent is due to other gasses that are present in very small amountsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Murck, Skinner, and Porter 488). A greenhouse gas known as carbon dioxide is the second biggest absorber of the suns heat rays. Humans affect the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in many ways. Every time fossil fuels are burned, more carbon dioxide is released into the air. Car exhaust emissions also increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, and more carbon dioxide means more heat rays being absorbed. This will cause the earths temperature to warm. Another greenhouse gas is methane. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Methane absorbs infrared radiation 25 times more effectively than carbon dioxide, making it an important greenhouse gas despite its relatively low concentrationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Murck, Skinner, and Porter 490). Many studies have been performed on how methane is released into the atmosphere. Results have shown that methane is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“generated by biological activity related to rice cultivation, leaks in domestic and industrial gas lines, and the digestive process of domestic livestock, especially cattleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Murck, Skinner, and Porter 490). The Environmental Media Services Organization has found that the greenhouse effect à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“could drive temperatures up as much as 6 degrees by the year 2100 an increase in heat comparable to the 10 degree warming that ended the last ice ageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Fast Facts). If a 10-degree warming was the factor that ended the last ice age, imagine what another warming could do. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Consider hydrology, for instance. Warm air holds more water vapor than cold air, so there is an increase in evaporation in dry areas, and hence more drought something that has been documented on every continent. Once that water is in the atmosphere, its going to come down somewhere and, indeed, we have seen the most dramatic flooding ever recorded in recent years. In 2004, 300 million humans, 1 in 20 of us, had to leave their homes for a week, a month, a year, or forever because of rising watersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (The Planet Speaks 124). Much of the gained water would be from melting icecap s in the ocean and melting glaciers on land. Coastal cities and islands could be wiped out. Global warming would not affect only humans; it would also affect sea life. This would happen because water temperatures would rise. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Corals are intolerant of temperatures just a few degrees warmer than usualà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Fast Facts). There have been problems with corals dying out in the past few years because of increased water temperatures. Other marine life would probably migrate to warmer waters. The warm water would make them think they were in their natural habitat. A downfall to this unknown migration would be that food would become scarce in their new, unadapted habitat. An example is salmon; salmon are also sensitive to the temperature of the water. During the summer when the water is warm, salmon have a high metabolic rate. During the winter months, their metabolism slows down, which is good because less food is available at this time. With global warming and increased water temperatures, salmon would have a high metabolic rate longer each year. They woul d possibly eat all the available food and many salmon would die as a result. Global warming is already disturbing patterns of the circulation of seawater. Cold water moves along the sea floor toward the equator and warm water around the equator moves toward the poles across the surface of the ocean. This process is very important to the living of ocean species. This circulation process brings oxygenated water to the sea floor. If this process no longer happened, water along the sea floor would become depleted of the oxygen organisms need to surviveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Fast Facts). The resulting factor would be more death among deep-sea organisms. There are many negative environmental effects of global warming. Another effect is the fact that higher temperatures will lead to a change in the water cycle. Warmer temperatures will cause a greater amount of evaporation from lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans. In some areas this could be good, but in other areas it could be bad. In northern regions of the U.S., where we live, an increase in the temperature and the amount of rain could extend the growing season of crops. In turn, the farmers could make more money. It could also hurt some farmers though. There is a possibility that crops could get too much rain and crops could be killed. Certain areas would actually get less rain, which would lead to more droughts. Warm temperatures and wet weather would be the main result of global warming in certain areas, and warm temperatures and wet weather are factors that promote tropical storms. Thus, tropical storms would appear more often and with greater frequencies. More rain as a result of global warming will also force plant life and its species to adjust their location. Species migrate naturally, but scientists ay that global warming would cause them to migrate at a much faster rate. If the climate changes, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“some forest species in North America will shift by as much as 300 miles to the northà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (Campaign to Stop Global Warming). Plants will also be forced to migrate. If one region is getting more rain than another, plants that need more rain that are on the border of these two regions will naturally begin migrating into the region that is getting more rain. A recent impact of global warming is that it is helping some diseases spread easier and to more people. Mosquitoes are a major carrier of deadly tropical diseases. These diseases are commonly known as malaria, cholera, and dengue fever. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Malaria outbreaks are usually confined to where the minimum winter temperature reaches no lower than 16 degrees Celsiusà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚  (To Save Lives), according to the Worldwide Fund for Nature, an independent conservation organization. Scientists are beginning to notice that malaria outbreaks are occurring outside the normal areas and are attributing this to increased temperatures from global warming. States inside the U.S. have even had more cases of malaria. Summers in the U.S. are getting more hot and humid than usual, I can vow for this, and malaria mosquitoes thrive in hot and humid weather. Increased temperatures and more rain cause hot and humid weather and if the earth continues to get warmer, malaria will spread to even mor e new places. A study suggests that malaria transmissions would increase from 45% of the globe to 60% of the globe if atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases reach concentrations equivalent to a doubling of CO2 since the Industrial Revolution (Campaign to Stop Global Warming). Cholera and dengue fever also pose threats to new populations because they too are carried by mosquitoes that thrive in hot and humid weather. As with malaria, more cholera and dengue fever outbreaks are occurring because of migrating mosquitoes. These are the most dangerous effects of global warming right now because unlike all the other effects discussed, these diseases can kill humans within a two-week time and they can spread like wildfire. Global warming has become a major environmental problem in the last five years and it isnt getting any better. The small increases in temperature seem harmless, but they can do an enormous of damage to the earths ecosystem. Only a few degrees ended the last ice age, another warming like that could have a catastrophic effect on the earth and its creatures, including us. In order to stop global warming, much has to be done. The first thing to do to control the earths temperature is to lower the burning and/or the emissions of fossil fuels because that is the single most responsible cause of global warming. The downfall is that after the global warming process has started, it is very hard to reverse it. Global warming temperatures grow exponentially and we will have to create an answer for global warming sooner than people think. I dont know how to start the process of burning less fossil fuels. All I know is global warming has to be stopped if we want to keep living the way we do now. If it isnt stopped, the problems discussed in this paper will only get bigger and bigger and the ending result will ultimately be death. She was not ruthless and greedy and neither was the assumed criminal. Dr. Peterson was disillusioned because of her love for John Ballantine, but it destructed her sight of logic not her sight to see that John was a criminal. She was but wasn’t alienated from society. The society that she knows is the people she works with, but since she works in a mental asylum she is alienated from â€Å"normal† society. Dr. Peterson works against the police only to find out what actually happened to the real Dr. Edwards, but she is not a suspect to the crime. Personally, I wouldn’t call her psychologically wounded or morally ambiguous, just hard headed.

An Analysis of Page 69-70 of Chopin’s The Awakening Each time I read The Awakening, I am drawn to the passage on page 69 where Edna and Madame Ratignolle argue about â€Å"the essential† and â€Å"the unessential.† Edna tries to explain, â€Å"I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself.† What most would see as essential—money (you need it for food, clothing, shelter, etc) and life—Edna sees as â€Å"unessential.† Edna is speaking of more than that which one needs for physical survival; she would not hesitate to give her life to save the life of one of her children. On the other hand, Edna’s being, her â€Å"self,† is something quite different from her physical form. Madame Ratignolle simply does not understand Edna; to her, sacrificing one’s life is the utmost that a mother can do for her children. It is as if Edna was not even â€Å"talking the same language.† In fact, the two women might well be speaking different languages. Unlike Madame Ratignolle who seems to have a baby every couple of years, Edna’s head is not filled exclusively with thoughts about her children. Whereas Madame Ratignolle is motherly at all times, Edna often seems irritated by her role as mother, and her attentions to her children often occur as an afterthought. Madame Ratignolle’s entire being is bound to her children; Edna’s being is of her own design. For her there is more to life than marriage and babies and social obligations. Edna might well, at least in this passage, be asserting an early version of what Betty Friedan discusses in The Feminine Mystique. Previously, the narrator has intimated, â€Å"She had all her life long been accustomed to harbor thoughts and emotions which never voiced themselves. They had never taken the form of struggles. They belonged to her and were her own.† Her thoughts and emotions engulf her, but she does not â€Å"struggle† with them. There are always people who prove to have better leadership skills than others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding’s novel, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to demonstrate a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the novel by keeping order among the group, treating everyone with respect, and having the sense to keep his focus on getting rescued. While the boys are under Jack’s control, they quickly turn into uncivilized savages. However, Ralph manages to keep the boys under control by holding meetings. At the meetings, a sense of order is brought on to the boys because the boys are not allowed to speak unless they have the conch. â€Å"l will give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking.† (p. 31) By enforcing this sense of order, he gains respect from the boys and becomes more confident as a leader. Ralph uses his power to make the boys feel more comfortable on the island.

Societies Although written in different time periods and in dissimilar settings, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy are both feminist novels with main characters who are suppressed by their societies. Misogyny is fully apparent in both novels, and both Offred and Tess utilize similar means to endure their harsh societies. A misogynistic society is clearly depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale. In Offred’s society, the handmaids’ only role in society is becoming pregnant.When Offred is going to the Commander’s house, she states, â€Å"We are two-legged wombs, that’s all: sacred vessels, ambulatory chalices† (Atwood 136). Because the Republic of Gilead is suffering from low birth rates, the handmaids are treated not as human beings, but as mere objects with the sole goal of bringing children into the world. Their only values are their wombs. In addition to being an object only focused on birth and children, Offred is a slave to everyone and everything around her.Throughout the whole novel, Offred is rarely able to make any decisions for herself; everything is already chosen for her. â€Å"Everything except the wings around my face is red: the color of blood, which defines us† (8). Offred is even judged and branded by her clothes. Red, the color of fertility and raciness, tells citizens of Gilead who she is, and what she is meant to do. As a handmaid, Offred is fully taken care of, but has no basic rights. Once she realizes that the Commander actually cares for her and doesn’t think of her as an object, she becomes hopeful and starts believing that she might have a chance. Likewise, Tess utilizes her friendship with Marian, Izz, and Retty to overcome the many obstacles that come her way. Her friends often help her realize how much she loves Angel, and they constantly tell her that she is, in fact, worthy of Angel’s love.When Marian and Izz how miserable Tess is when Angel has left, they stick by her and write an anonymous letter to Angel telling him that Tess loves him and he should come back to her if he loves her, because there is an enemy nearby (Hardy 383). The poets parents found it more difficult then Seamus because he didn’t know his brother that much, he had a distanced relationship. â€Å"Snow drops and candles† shows the compassion of the event, he does this by good use of symbolism. He used the snow drops to show that he died in peace as they are white and innocent like his brother. â€Å"A four foot box, a foot for every year† Only now does Seamus realize that he will only have the memory of his brother. â€Å"Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple.† Poppies are commonly used to portray the violent, tragic death of a young person, in this case his younger brother. We also know that he got hit by a car so hard that it killed him â€Å"the bumper knocked him clear.† We know that he died on his 7th birthday, â€Å"seven years tho’ were lent to me.† No matter how protective parents are over their children there are greater forces that can determine the faith of the children that are out of the parents hands. â€Å"scap’d worlds, and fleshes rage† Jonson is telling the reader that his son has now left the real world and doesn’t have to deal with any awful things that you might come across in your lifetime. 2) What do we learn about feelings of the writers? This hints that he is saying good-bye to his son and this is his way of letting him go. Ben Jonson uses faith to help him through the bereavement. Biblical phrases like â€Å"child of my right hand†, â€Å"my sinne was† are scattered through the text. Seamus Heaney uses indirect ways to portray grief, by describing events that happen after the death. Heaney doesn’t talk or write about how he feels, he writes about what he sees and remembers. He is keeping his emotions silent. His writing is detached because he expresses no emotion himself, and if he does it is understated and under layers of what he says. He is confused about his brothers death and reports the poem like an outsider. Alternatively, he may write like an outsider because its so tragic and he cant express his own feelings because he wont be able to come to terms with it. Ben Jonson writes On My First Sonne from a father’s point of view grieving over the death of his very young son. He uses the Iambic Pentameter which reflects the sound of a heart beat. He does this because it’s the first and last thing a human hears, this links to the birth and death of his short lived son. He also used a rhetorical question â€Å"he should envie?† He states that he is jealous of his son, because now he is closer to god in heaven. He indicates that he is a religious man. His sons death has made him question his faith which used to be so strong. The son, sitting on the right hand of his father, would remind a Christian reader of the Creed, in which the Son ‘sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.’

From bell bottoms to Barbies, every generation has its own distinct trends. While various fads have cropped up in each era, music has always been a key element of culture. Starting in the 1950’s, music became integrated within the American culture as the favored form of expression. The popular types of music found on the Top 100 lists today however, have changed dramatically since then. What has promoted this obvious change in music choice? While rock ‘n’ roll still holds its own in the music billboards of 2010, the general public now prefers the mechanical sounds of hip hop and pop. So which trends in music and in thought made the rebellious rock ‘n’ roll such a craze in the 1950’s, but not now? Each era has had specific trends, schools of thought and attitudes that have veered them into a specific genre of music. Rockin’ Out Before 1950, the American culture held firm social expectations. Males were expected to enroll into the military or work, and women were expected to stay in the kitchen. America was pulling out of the depression, and wealth and prosperity was not considered a necessity. As the United States prevailed in World War II however, America started to change startlingly. While many people were focused on conforming with their neighbors, the social structure was revolutionized. Soldiers returned, many experiencing traumatic psychological and physical problems. Women who had integrated themselves into the work force now found themselves replaced by returning soldiers. Most importantly, families started experiencing a great deal of economic independence. This increasing affluence gave teenagers a chance to break away from their parents’ lifestyles. Teens started creating their own clothing trends, dance fads, and hairstyles (Cox). As these new fads and styles starting breaking away from social norms, rock ‘n’ roll became the sound of change. Conservative parents viewed rock ‘n’ roll, and the hip gyrations that came with it, as a gift from the devil. Despite their parents protestations however, teenagers idolized musicians like Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Elvis. So what made rock ‘n’ roll the epitome of 1950 culture? Four recording companies-Decca, R. C. A. , Columbia and Capital-had a virtual monopoly over the popular music field in the early 1950’s. This control made rock ‘n’ roll wildly popular, simply because there was no competition (Lewis 47). As the 1950’s went on, their control weakened, yet rock ‘n’ roll still prevailed as the dominant music genre. A contributing factor to its increasing popularity was the lack of musicians being schooled in theory, technique and composition. Rock ‘n’ roll paved a golden road for a small, charismatic group of people. They provided music rapidly to the American public, without having to compose masterpieces rivaling the music of Bach, Liszt and Debussy. Rock ‘n’ roll also created an easy and fun way to express complex emotions through beating rhythms and twisting ostinato patterns. Simon Anderson explains, â€Å"The amplified bass seems to produce a kind of second-level rumble, a subsidiary moaning and groaning, an incantation of the adolescent subculture, where no one really knows or cares how they feel about life. † This â€Å"incantation of the adolescent subculture† spoke to the class, gender and racial conflicts tearing through America at the time. Rock ‘n’ roll introduced the American white culture to black music. Teenagers soon became addicted to the rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll, all of which was black-inspired. The crossing of racial culture helped the disintegration of the color line. Appreciation of black music helped increase recognition of blacks in popular culture (Bertrand). Though the rhythms and beat of rock ‘n’ roll spoke to the carefree teenager life, often the lyrics promoted conventional values and strength in relationships. 83. 4% of songs in 1955 were love ballads in the conversational mode (Carey 723). Most songs told of lovers, yearning for each other in some type of sense. This theme reflects the attitudes of teenagers in the 1950’s, as this was the first generation people were allowed to marry for love. Women had more freedom to travel into the workplace and finally be on equal grounds with their husbands. Husbands did not have to leave their wives for war. Children had more autonomy as parents no longer dictated who and when they were going to love. However, as this freedom was increasingly integrated into American culture over time, the amount of love related songs dramatically dropped. In 1966, only 69. 5% of produced songs were about love and courtship (Carey 723). Rock ‘n’ roll provided the perfect form of expression in the 1950’s. It combined lyrical ties to radical social changes and catchy rhythms unique to its generation. What’s Hip Now? The change tearing through America in the 1950’s persists to this day. 2010 has brought a busier, more materialistic, culture than ever before. The trends of women working outside of the home and increasing teenage autonomy persists. American teenagers are given more discretionary time than ever before in history. Reed Larson studied this continuing trend and explains, â€Å"If we look back over the past 200 years, the most striking historic change in young people’s use of time is that youths spend much less time on labor activities today than they did in America’s agrarian past† (160). Some teenagers use this newfound source of time dedicated to structured voluntary activities such as sports, theatre, work, etc. others dedicate escalating amounts of time to mind-numbing entertainment. And with hundreds of new forms of mass media, it is hard to not get caught up in the technology tornado sweeping through the nation. The endless barrage of t. v. , facebook, internet sites, music, iPhone’s and iPod’s, video and computer games can easily overwhelm the distracted teenager. Mass media however, is not promoting enlightening or uplifting ideas or values. Instead, popular music now screams lyrics advocating ridiculous displays of wealth, substance abuse and the need for physical love. Top rated songs like â€Å"Billionaire,† â€Å"Raise Your Glass,† and â€Å"Low† are all examples of this. Misogynistic rap lyrics have become a dominant feature in the work of several artists. Often in hip-hop and pop music, â€Å"women serve as mindless props or accessories to be doused with expensive champagne or to shake their half-naked bodies to repetitive beats and sexist lyrics† (Murry 6). In Eminem’s recent hit to â€Å"I Love the Way You Lie,† his last verse reads, â€Å"I'm tired of the games/ I just want her back/ I know I'm a liar/ If she ever tries to f***ing leave again/ I'mma tie her to the bed/ And set the house on fire. Songs like this expressing control over women physically, sexually and emotionally predominate popular culture. How did songs depicting such unrealistic and immoral ideals become the rage in American teenage culture? Perhaps it is hip-hop’s diligent presence in pop culture. For the last two decades, hip-hop has â€Å"prided itself on being misunderstood; it lacks sentimentality and is not easily thwarted by moralizing efforts† (Murray 8). And for the last two decades, American teenagers have prided themselves on being misunderstood, and have not been easily thwarted by moralizing efforts. A mass culture trend has changed communication from the sincerity of face to face conversation to the simplicity of texting and Facebook. This has lead to a decrease in sentimentality and an increase in misunderstandings between people. Moral beliefs practiced by preceding generations have also disappeared. Ethics such as chastity, honesty and virtue have become unfashionable and undesirable. The change in lyrics from conventional love ballads in the 1950’s to the focus on money and sexual prizes reflects the changes in behavior and schools of thought throughout the generations. Lyrical Art The lyrics found in any genre of music influences the emotions of the listener (Krumhans 45). Martina McBride’s pop hit â€Å"Concrete Angel† is a fantastic example of emotion correlating with song lyrics. The heart-wrenching song tells the story of an little girl who is killed because of physical abuse in her home. The chorus reads, â€Å"Through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone/ In a world that she can’t rise above/ But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place/ Where she’s loved/ Concrete Angel. Though the melody, key, tension or dynamics help create an emotional state throughout this song, the lyrics were what made this song so emotionally powerful. â€Å"Concrete Angel† acquires its emotional meaning through the association of events that the general audience can relate too. Though the majority of the listeners will not have experienced physical abuse first hand, they can sympathize because they are aware o f the emotional, physical and mental damage violence incurs. Musicians know of the power lyrics hold. Lyrics can tell stories that make hearts melt, enlighten schools of thought never explored before, or create strong physical reactions. But lyrics that the majority of the public can relate to, sell better. This is the reason why the general themes songs have expressed have changed so dramatically over the last sixty years. The teenagers in 1950 were just starting to experience economic prosperity and free love. To listen to music completely revolving around money and sex would be crossing a line they hadn’t invented yet. And the youth in 2010 will not easily relate to ballads focused around falling in love with that one person because most are not looking for one person to love. Both the love-bound lyrics of the 1950’s and the materialistic lyrics of pop songs today accurately reflect the culture they predominate. Rhythm ‘n’ Blues Several other factors influence what makes cultural music popular. Lyrics must be in a proper combination of rhythm, harmony, key, dissonance, tension and dynamics for a song to reach it’s full potential. Even the untrained ear can distinguish feelings associated with the mode of the piece. Major, fast paced songs are associated with happy feelings while minor, slow, soft songs are correlated with sad feelings. Dissonant, unstable, tense songs often invoke feelings of fear. These feelings can all be present without powerful lyrics. Much of the world’s music is instrumental, and most of these create powerful emotion in the listener (Krumahns 48). So which musical factors specifically influenced popular music in the 1950’s and today? The drumming beats found in most rock ‘n’ roll pieces created a powerful sound teenagers revolved around. The harsh rhythms, instability of sound and rockin’ dance moves associated with rock ‘n’ roll all helped increase its popularity. Popular music today features fast paced songs with mechanical sounds in the background. Songs incorporate an inordinate amount of words per second, often leaving the listener wondering what they just heard. In the new hit single â€Å"Love Like Woe,† the listener hears, â€Å"Cause I got some intuition/ Or maybe I’m superstitious/ But I think you’re a pretty sweet pill that I’m swallowing down/ To counter this addiction/ You’ve got me on a mission/ Tell me darling, can I get a break somehow? Could I say no? ,† all in a mere ten seconds. The fast pace of songs are easily correlated with the fast pace of teenagers lives today. Teenagers are expected to excel in school, extracurriculars, athletics, music, and family life all at the same time. Pop music is branching away from traditional instruments to a more machine based background. The popular song â€Å"Like a g6† even goes as far as making the chorus voices sound computerized. Classical music appreciation has severely declined and sounds symbolizing a mechanical, over the top life, have taken control of the musical industry. The Ensemble Musical preference is very much behavioral. In the words of Simon V. Anderson, â€Å"If music educators did not believe that musical preference is socially conditioned. . . They would not work in the public classrooms at all, but rather, they would spend their time and energy in the science laboratories searching for the virus . . . that impairs musical judgment† (39). Popular music preference has much to do with the language, values and beliefs of the teenagers perspective of popular culture. Trendy music will be the music that teenagers can relate to and create for them the feelings they desire. Music choice however also reflects how the music makes one feel while listening to it. Popular songs in 1950 and 2010 reflect the culture they predominate through the general theme of lyrics and background noises. In each culture, music has been a favored form of expression and creates emotion based on what the culture wants. As even now, popular culture changes from liking bell bottoms to skinny jeans and back again, pop music changes with it to accurately reflect the culture it has been rooted upon.
